Social media has grown tremendously in the last few years; specially Facebook, WhatsApp Instagram and Twitter have grown much faster and captured millions of users in just a few years. The way technology is growing, it is obvious that more and more people are going to grasp its benefits. It has brought a lot of advantages for the society. From progressed nations to under-developed countries, every nation is utilizing the power of social media to enhance life and also for the bitterness of people.
My journey starts from my place of origin; I come from Ghana, a country that has found herself in the African continent, of which she is very proud of . She is not limited to the tremendous growth of social media platforms. Some of the most buzzing social media platforms in Ghana are Facebook, Twitter WhatsApp Instagram and many more but I will limit my article to these four platforms.
Growing up I was told to be the best I want to be, I was also told not to envy or compare my life to others because the hands aren’t the same. Society also made sure I came to terms with the Senegalese proverbs that state that, haste and hurry can only bear children with many regrets along the way. Then as I journeyed to the linguistic and English department of the University of Ghana, I was graciously introduced to a term “academic discourse”. A term I fell in love with and decided to practice in all the various social media platforms I was registered in.
In the beginning I received so many positive outcomes however I also noticed so many silent negative things that we need to take note of and address as a society. Today in this article I am going to discuss just the silent negative outcomes of the above mentioned social media platforms to our society.
The haters (cyberbully)
One of the first things that is commonly noticed in the Ghanaian social media platforms is haters also termed as cyber bullying. These are people who say or write unpleasant things about others, they hide behind the internet and make certain unpleasant comments about people’s body shape, cloths and personal affairs .Most times a background check on these accounts shows either the account is fake or the person is just a hater that has found him or herself in friend lists or a stalker.
On Facebook I found out to my surprise that the youth just don’t like reading. Articles that are meant to trigger discussions beneficial to society are given less attention. And in instances where such articles are given attention at all it means writers have added their pictures to articles. Sadly, writers will mostly receive comment about the pictures and not the articles and in cases where there are comments about the articles you will realized that most of these comments lack comprehension on the subject.
Envy and Jealousy attitude
On Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp status people tend to update their pictures for admiration but unfortunately most people who do this tend to complain of unnecessary rivalry and competition among their peers .A critically analysis of such unnecessary rivalry and competition always point to envy and jealousy ignited deliberately or not deliberately by the user who posted pictures or write ups on the platform.
The virtual love affair
Most of social media users tend to display their affection for each other on their platforms although some of these social media relationships do not exist in real live. They are famously known for always liking and commenting favorable on every post of the other partner and it always look rosy until one person start investing emotions and expect a return to this investment which half the time doesn’t just happen. A lot of relationships have been ruined because of these kind of social media behaviors.
There are so many silent negative things that we need to take note of and address as a society but time will not permit me to write all .
However you can help by noting the rests and providing solutions in the comment button.
Just like any other thing which can be used for both good and bad, social media have also provided the negative and positive ways for the people.
It is all about the usage and getting things done positively by using the power of social media. It is in the hands of the user to use to its advantage. But willingly or unwillingly it can still have negative impacts on the users
