Far too often we spend too much time loving and taking care of others and neglecting ourselves. I have learnt that you are able to love others when you love first yourself.
What is self-love to you? How well do you love yourself?
To me self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness, which means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others or settling for less than you deserve.
Self-love however, does not mean others are less in terms of personality, intelligent, beauty etc. than you. Rather it means you are willing to accept your weaknesses and to appreciate these so-called weaknesses as something that makes you unique.
There are three main categories of Self-love:
- Physical –this refers to how you perceive yourself
- Mental – how you think of yourself (Self-acceptance)
- Psychologically – how you treat yourself (Self-respect)
We need to understand that, self-love in an internal cognitive process that can only be done by us on a daily purposeful routine basis. Once it is cultivated internally, the positive result of your lifestyle will shine effortlessly as you build your confidence to embark on new challenges.
It makes you have compassion for yourself; you treat yourself with kindness and forgive yourself, even at worst moments beside you don’t compete or compare yourself with others.
When you love yourself;you take care of yourself like the way you want others to take care of you. When you love yourself more, it changes your perspective of the world, which gives you a more positive attitude towards life; an essential ingredient for success in life and for mental well-being.
Self-love reduces your chances of suffering anxiety or depression. When you love yourself you will feel less stressed to handle failure or difficult situations because your new formed perspective to life will challenge you to get creative and to find solution to the situation.
To love means you must first love yourself..
